API 5L Grade B Pipe

The API 5L Grade B specification includes welded and seamless pipes. The electric resistant weld ERW pipes range from ½ inches to 24 inches in diameter whereas the seamless pipes range from ½ inches to 60 inches in diameter. The wall thicknesses vary depending on the schedules of these pipes. There are schedules 20 through XXS and heavier with up to 250mm wall thickness in this range of pipes. There are two product specification levels within grade B. The API 5L PSL1 Grade B and the API 5L PSL2 Grade B are in use but the PSL1 is the most used one. The PSL2 has slightly higher mechanical properties than PSL1. The NACE MR0175 covers this specification and therefore makes it applicable for corrosion resistant applications. The uses of these pipes can be seen in oil, natural gas and petroleum industries. The yield strength of Grade B pipe is at 240MPa minimum and the tensile strength is at a minimum of 415MPa. The API 5L Gr.B Carbon Steel pipes could be plain, beveled screwed or threaded. The length also varies from random, double random to required lengths. Hot rolling and cold drawing methods are applied in production of these pipes and they could be used in engineering purposes and power generation applications as well.

Is API 5L Grade B Linepipe Repairable?

In API 5L Grade B only PSL 1 are repaired as per agreement between the purchaser and the manufacturer but Gr.B PSL2 linepipe not allowed to repair.

  • PSL means Product Specification Level, PSL2 Pipe is used where fracture toughness required for critical stress applications. PSL2 also have vast chemical composition than PSL1.
