API 5L Seamless and ERW Line Pipe

API 5L pipes are used in conveying water, oil and gas. These are used in natural gas, oil refineries and water supply systems. There are two different product specification levels of this pipe that have different composition and mechanical properties. The pipes can range from 2 inches to 24 inches in outer diameter. The wall thicknesses vary with schedules and there are schedules 10 through XXS and custom sized. The API 5L PSL1 has a composition of 0.24% carbon, 1.40% manganese, 0.025% phosphorous, 0.015% sulfur, 0.45% silicon, 0.10% vanadium, 0.05% niobium, 0.04% titanium and others in trace amounts as well. The API 5L PSL2 has a composition without silicon, vanadium, niobium and titanium. Therefore it has higher carbon at 0.28% and sulfur at 0.03%. The minimum tensile strength and yield strength of these two product specification levels are the same at 66,700Ksi for tensile strength and 52,000Ksi for yield strength. The NACE MR0175 is a specification by the National Association of Corrosion Engineers which lists the API 5L Carbon Steel as corrosion resistant. The PSL 1 and PSL 2 also have different requirements as per the testing, certification and traceability when purchased. SR4 and SR15.1 certificates are mandatory for PSL2 where they are optional for the purchaser with PSL1.
