API 5L X42 Pipe

API 5L X42 is a specification of pipes used for transportation of oil, gas and water under high temperatures. The pipes are used in natural gas industries, oil refineries and in water lines. These have a minimum yield strength of 42000PSI and a minimum tensile strength of 60000PSI. There are variations of the pipes that are made in seamless and welded conditions. Also there are plain ended, belled-end, threaded and through the flowline pipes available. There are two product specification levels available, the PSL1 and the PSL2. PSL1 is the commonly used while PSL2 comes with added mechanical properties. API 5L X42 PSL2 and the API 5L X42 PSL1 both could be hot rolled, seamless or welded. Their nominal bore size ranges from 3/8 inches to 30 inches. Their pressure ratings and wall thicknesses differ with the schedules and there are schedules 20 through XXS and heavier in API 5L Grade X42. There are different grades such as API 5L X42 Grade B which specify their mechanical properties for different applications. The HIC Tested X42 pipes are resistant to hydrogen embrittlement. The standard ISO 3183 L290 Grade X42 has to undergo this test as part of the quality control procedure. They can come with epoxy coating, 3LPE coating or color coating as well.
